Abstract: An updated Science Vision for the SOFIA project is presented, including an overview of the characteristics and capabilities of the observatory and first generation instruments. A primary focus is placed on four science themes: 'The Purpose: SOFIA flies into the stratosphere at 11,582-13,716 meters (38,000-45,000 feet), above 99% of Earth's infrared-blocking atmosphere, allowing astronomers to study the solar system and beyond in ways that are not possible with ground-based telescopes.The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a 2.7 meter telescope (with an effective aperture of 2.5 m) carried aboard a Boeing 747SP aircraft.
